Complex and amazing individuals!
Non-human primates are endlessly fascinating, complicated, and unique. They are exceptionally intelligent, social, cultural, communicative, and unpredictable. The care of these amazing animals requires a deeply scientific approach to being able to provide all that they need to thrive. Because primates are so unique as individuals, the foundation of primate care is individualized care. Such an approach requires a deep understanding of both the species and the individual. In this, your facility can arrive at appropriate care plans, enrichment programs, social housing, operant conditioning plans, enclosure designs, and your veterinary needs.
Allow the Elgin Center to work with your staff, utilizing their knowledge of your individual primate residents combined with our expertise in non-human primate care. The Elgin Center is led by Dr. Andrew Halloran, a primatologist and an expert in primate care.
Primate Social Introductions
Social introductions are complicated and can be very stressful for both the primates and the staff performing the introductions. Dr. Halloran has overseen the successful introductions of over 250 chimpanzees, and overseen their complete integrations into social groups. The results of these introductions allowed the chimpanzees in his care to live within a rich social environment, and with the freedom of choice and self determination that is required for chimpanzees to thrive. Dr. Halloran understands that there is no one set method for these introductions — and that the foundation of a successful introduction rests in a knowledge of social roles, the dominance hierarchy, use of available space, and proceeding, by the letter, to a written introduction plan. What ever species of non-human primate that is housed at your facility, The Elgin Center can assist you with social introductions.
